3-3 Blog Project Inspiration

I located a blog by Shane Boland Harrison, a 6-8 grade science teacher at the Pathfinder School, a private school in Traverse City, Michigan. Middle schoolers each have their own science blogs and post frequently to summarize lab experiments, document results, share photos of engineering projects, and reflect on their learning.

In one project, students were tasked with a creative writing prompt, asking them to personify the victims of an environmental issue to raise awareness and call students to action.

Student Example:

Author Savannahd2020 described the problems with microplastic fog in our oceans by writing about “Alexander Albatross” and his friends’ experiences trying to eat a tasty brunch, but ultimately becoming sick and dying from a lack of nutrients due to deadly microplastics in the seawater.

This project was impressive because it was written in a fun and creative way, while sharing relevant science facts. I could ask my 6th grade scientists in my Earth science class to blog in a similar way about current science events, a journey through the layers of the earth, a volcanic eruption, severe weather events, space environments, and more.
